The comparison guide

What are you delegating?

A code review, an engineering task and delivery of a backlog are different purchases. Compare the work each product takes on, the evidence it returns and the process your team still needs to own.

Where Descant fits

Descant runs a defined engineering process around your GitHub issues: planning, implementation, separate review, verification and eligible merge. Multiple models do the engineering work; software carries the work between stages and records what happened.

The buying question is how much of that process you want supplied with the product. Other tools also test, review, delegate and automate. Compare the configured workflow and its evidence, not the presence of an “agent” label.

Inside the Descant process

Autonomous engineering platforms

Delegate an engineering task or a larger project. Compare how work is planned, coordinated, checked and delivered.

An autonomous software engineer that writes, runs and tests code. Managed sessions can split and coordinate work in parallel; the product also offers PR review, reusable skills and learning from past sessions.

The evaluation questionWhich completion criteria and review policy will apply to every task, and what evidence will remain after it finishes?

Factory

A coding platform with automated review, QA and documentation workflows. Workstreams uses an orchestrator and parallel agents to deliver pull requests. Workstreams is in beta, with availability limited to the plans listed in its documentation.

The evaluation questionDo you want to configure an agent platform, or adopt a defined issue-to-merge process? Compare the actual review and acceptance policy in each setup.

Review and change management

Improve the path from a proposed change to a merge. Some products now also write code and automate delivery.

Review and change management with a cloud coding agent. It can turn requests or findings into code, fix CI failures and add tests. Optional Autofix follows changes through review and checks; approval policies and Triage rules govern automated approval and merging.

The evaluation questionAre you improving the handling of changes already in flight, or delegating delivery of a backlog? Check which coding, review and merge settings you will enable.

Greptile

A review agent that uses a graph of the repository to examine pull requests. Findings include suggested fixes and handoff to a coding agent; team reactions and replies inform future reviews.

The evaluation questionIf review is the bottleneck, this is a direct evaluation. If delivery is the bottleneck, decide what will own implementation, verification and follow-through.

Native coding agents

Work in an editor, terminal, app or cloud environment. These agents can implement, test, review and delegate; the surrounding workflow matters.

An editor and agent platform with cloud agents that can build, test and use a browser in parallel, including across repositories. Its PR review product can also start cloud agents to fix findings automatically.

The evaluation questionHow will you connect agent work, review and merge policy for recurring backlog delivery? Evaluate the cloud workflow as well as the editor.

A coding agent across local and cloud surfaces. Cloud tasks work in their own environments, subagents can handle parallel work, and the GitHub integration can review pull requests. You can inspect results, request changes and open a pull request.

The evaluation questionWhich delivery requirements are part of your configured workflow, and which will you need to request or verify for each task?

Claude Code

A coding agent available in the terminal, IDE, desktop and browser. It reads and edits code, runs commands and integrates with development tools. Specialized subagents, background agents and agent teams support delegated and parallel work.

The evaluation questionIf you assemble your own engineering process around the agent, who maintains its contracts, review policy, evidence records and recovery paths?

GitHub's coding assistant combines repository questions, planning, code changes, PR review and automations. Its newer cloud sessions continue across web, mobile and local clients; access depends on plan and organization policy.

The evaluation questionDoes the configured repository workflow give you the acceptance evidence and review accountability you need, beyond generating a pull request?

Inside Descant

The process around the code

These are parts of Descant’s delivery process, not a claim that every other product lacks them. Model judgement and executable checks work together; neither guarantees bug-free software.

Multiple models, separate responsibilities

Different models take author and reviewer roles. A separate review is part of the process, with findings and their dispositions recorded.

Explicit contracts

Each stage has a defined job and expected result. Software owns the transitions; models make the engineering judgements within them.

Evidence you can inspect

Reviewers receive recorded test evidence and checks for the revision under review. The process identifies missing evidence and checks which approved revision is eligible to merge.

Parallel work with dependencies

Large work is broken into issues. Issuegraph coordinates dependencies so independent work can run in parallel and dependent work has an order.

Learning and backlog upkeep

The process captures reusable learnings in the repository and grooms related issues after merge, carrying useful context into later work.

Cost attached to the work

Run costs are recorded, with available breakdowns by stage and role. You can inspect what planning, implementation and review cost for a piece of work.

Compare on work you recognize

Give the products the same issue, repository and acceptance criteria. Inspect the change, test evidence, review findings, human interventions and total cost through delivery. That tells you more than a feature checklist.

Source links sit with the claims they support; availability and behavior can depend on plan, configuration and product updates. The evaluation questions are our judgement.
